Summary

A fun, flirty teen debut from Wattpad phenom Alex Light about a fake relationship and real love。

It’s been years since seventeen-year-old Becca Hart believed in true love。 But when her former best friend teases her for not having had a boyfriend, Becca impulsively pretends she’s been secretly seeing someone。

Brett Wells has it all。 As captain of the football team and one of the most popular guys in his school, he should have no problem finding someone to date, but he’s always been more focused on his future than who to bring to prom。

When he overhears Becca’s lie, Brett decides to step in and be the mystery guy。 It’s the perfect solution: he gets people off his back for not having a meaningful relationship and she can keep up the ruse that she’s got a boyfriend。

Acting like the perfect couple isn’t easy, though, especially when you barely know the other person。 But with Becca still picking up the pieces from when her world was blown apart years ago and Brett just barely holding his together now, they begin to realize they have more in common than they ever could have imagined。

When the line between what is pretend and what is real begins to blur, they're forced to answer the question: Is this fake romance the realest thing in either of their lives?

not worth the read for me。 very predictable plot and cliche but in the worst way possible。 the characters had absolutely no personality。 :/ i just found myself skipping through the pages at 70% to get to the end faster。 i remembered years ago enjoying some of alex’s stories on wattpad though so i was expecting better but ended up disappointed

a very short and cute book! brett and becca are so cute together 💕 my only complaint would have to be when she threw the books into the lake 😩

I read this after a book hangover and it checked all of the boxes off for me! Fast-paced and swoon-worthy read!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 there's somethings i didn't like BUT i couldn't not give 5 stars to this book because pls i loved it so much。 and it was the first book other than diary of a wimpy kid that i read in less than a day。for starters, i really liked to see becca's development throughout the story。 she started as this girl who lives inside books and doesn't believe in love because of her parents' divorce and has so much inside her。 so many questions, so many bad feelings。 by the time the books ends she allows herself there's somethings i didn't like BUT i couldn't not give 5 stars to this book because pls i loved it so much。 and it was the first book other than diary of a wimpy kid that i read in less than a day。for starters, i really liked to see becca's development throughout the story。 she started as this girl who lives inside books and doesn't believe in love because of her parents' divorce and has so much inside her。 so many questions, so many bad feelings。 by the time the books ends she allows herself to feel the love she deserves and she forgives her father not for reconcile with him or whatever, but for the purpose of making herself feel the peace she needed during the whole five years。 also, i love that alex light shaped her in a way that even though she went through some hard stuff, she didn't wine to people or felt sorry for herself。 even when brett had his problems with his family and she thought to herself that well。。。 i don't have the family you have at all but i'm still here, she also thought that it was something that she shouldn't say and when he got sad/mad and he was a little rude to her she didn't actually thought of doing it back and i loved that about her。 one thing i didn't like was that she kept so much to herself and i'd have liked to see her talking more about everything, specifically with brett。now, about brett: he's truly the kind of boy who only exists in books and i hate alex for having me falling in love with him like that JSJSSKSJ。 well, i need to say that it must have been really hard for brett to go through all of that。 i also would like to say that i love readings books that have the popular guy and he's like the supreme crush of everybody and the other character (in this case, becca) says oh he's pretty and people say he's nice but i don't know if its true。 and then we get to read all that goes through his mind and he's just like everybody else, he has his family, his friends, his football, his feelings and is another teenage guy。 i loved how right from the start he was so nice to becca and i'm pretty sure right there on the second week they were "pretending" to be together he already liked her。 i need to say that the only thing i didn't like, even though it wasn't completely his fault because he was a mess but, when becca told him about her parents and how her dad left her and her mum and the stuff she was going through during 5 years to console him, he didn't actually say anything about it, even after he put himself together。 anyways, i still love him so much and i love that you could see that he started to like becca way earlier and with so much more intensity, and was touching her without even noticing when literally no one was around to watch it and it made my heart go all soft。thank u alex light for this book and i can't wait to read more from you。 。。。more

This book was just boring。 Yes, it was cute but 1。 there was no plot (or the plot was just so boring that I don’t remember it) 2。 it was way overhyped and 3。 I said it and I’m gonna say it again: it。 was。 boring。 But considering it’s a Wattpad book it’s pretty good

This was a cute read, I really liked Brett。 There wasn't a ton of substance to either character but together they were interesting。 I liked how they connected over similar family issues, because it felt genuine。 This was a cute read, I really liked Brett。 There wasn't a ton of substance to either character but together they were interesting。 I liked how they connected over similar family issues, because it felt genuine。 。。。more

This was such a fun read that made me laugh and remember the joys of teenage love。 The book is by no means an exceptional novel, but it was just a joy to read。 Isn’t that all that matters in the end?

Fake dating is something that I really like to read, and for this specific book I can't be more satisfied。The characters are so human, they make mistakes, enjoy simple things, and are able to forgive and for me that was the reason I loved this so much。Almost a year waiting to read this novel and all the expectations were reached。 Fake dating is something that I really like to read, and for this specific book I can't be more satisfied。The characters are so human, they make mistakes, enjoy simple things, and are able to forgive and for me that was the reason I loved this so much。Almost a year waiting to read this novel and all the expectations were reached。 。。。more

I'm going to say one nice thing about this book and get it over with right now: It's not as bad as The Betrothed。 Phew。 Glad that's out of the way。 Now let's get into the real review here。 Everything I Hated。 Most of the Book TBH- Every。 Single。 Cliche。 On。 The。 Planet。 Except。 The。 One。 Bed。 Trope™。 Was。 In。 This。 Book。 I was prepared for the Fake Dating Trope™, but I wasn't ready for every other trope to rear their heads and create a cascading mess of cliche。 Picture a small snowball rolling d I'm going to say one nice thing about this book and get it over with right now: It's not as bad as The Betrothed。 Phew。 Glad that's out of the way。 Now let's get into the real review here。 Everything I Hated。 Most of the Book TBH- Every。 Single。 Cliche。 On。 The。 Planet。 Except。 The。 One。 Bed。 Trope™。 Was。 In。 This。 Book。 I was prepared for the Fake Dating Trope™, but I wasn't ready for every other trope to rear their heads and create a cascading mess of cliche。 Picture a small snowball rolling down a hill until it becomes a boulder that demolishes an entire neighborhood。 That's how all the tropes in this book felt。 - Here's just the tip of the iceberg of the tropes going on here: Girl's One Interest Is Books™, Boi Is Football Captain™, Boi Has Dad Who Wants Him to Live Dad's Football Dream™, Girl Has Divorced Mother™, Girl Doesn't Believe in Love™, Girl's Best Subject Is English™, Girl Used to Have Best Friend who Dumped Her after Becoming Popular™, Girl Has Never Dated a Boi Before™, Everyone Is Obsessed with Boi and Thinks He the Stuff™, Boi Isn't Just a Dumb Jock but CARING Too™, Best Friend Who Disappears after Chapter 1™, Boi Fails Essay on Romeo and Juliet (y is it always this play???)™, Girl Helps Boi Fix His English Grade™, etc, etc, etc。 - Becca made me wanna cry。 She was a walking cliche and an idiot and the lady who did her voice in the audiobook made me want to punch myself in the eye。 - The scene where Becca throws the romance books in the lake 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 I AM DECEASED 💀 It was TOO FUNNY。 Basically this chick takes all her romance books and chucks them in a lake while crying cuz she got dumped and love isn't real and books lied to her and all。 Another girl tells her she's polluting the lake and Becca says, "Broken hearts are selfish。 They don't care about things like pollution。" Excuse me while I add that to my quote board。 Also did I mention Becca is a moron? - The parents in this book are WEIRD as fetch。 They are TOO invested in their children's relationships that it becomes creepy as heck。 Becca's mom is OBSESSED with Brett to the point it's gross。 And Brett's dad is legitimately so obsessed with Brett dating that it's beyond weird。 These parents need to STAHP。 - The fact the book is about how books lie about romance and love and then proceeds to lie about romance and love。 Seems like a bit of pot and kettling, if I don't say so myself。 - Ummm the adults' love lives are in shambles and traumatising their children, but their children overcome their fear of love because of HOTT BOI (and girl), and did I also mention these are children and are 17, and that's again where this book is lying about romance and love? Yeah, you can see the problems here。 Adults can't have healthy good relationships in this world。 Nah, the teenagers got ya covered。 - There were like 30 make out scenes in the last chapter。 Okay, that's an exaggeration, but it just went on and on and on and on and on。 Make it STAHP。 - Okay, the whole thing tbh。 There's a reason this is an always available short and sweet audiobook。 Nobody should listen to it。 。。。more

I thought it was a nice story and really loved the first 2/3 of it, but I wasn't a big fan of the last 3rd。 It is definitely a perfect kind of story for me。 I love all cute Teen love stories and "fake dating" is one of my favorite tropes。 🥰 I also enjoyed to read the story from two POVs and also see that the two main characters have different social statuses and started out as an "unlikely/ out of league" couple。 Although I really liked Brett he kind of ruined my view of him in the last 3rd of t I thought it was a nice story and really loved the first 2/3 of it, but I wasn't a big fan of the last 3rd。 It is definitely a perfect kind of story for me。 I love all cute Teen love stories and "fake dating" is one of my favorite tropes。 🥰 I also enjoyed to read the story from two POVs and also see that the two main characters have different social statuses and started out as an "unlikely/ out of league" couple。 Although I really liked Brett he kind of ruined my view of him in the last 3rd of the book。 Don't get me wrong it's still a nice and cute ending。 The ending just seemed to rush a little and needed a bit more time to really put the scenes nicely into the storyline。 Some parts seemed to be kind of pushed into the story in order to create more drama and tension, but it just felt wrong along with the quick changes of minds in the two main characters。 Besides the ending I loved Becca as a romance book lover with strong opinions and a love for English class。 I also very much enjoyed reading about her unique relationship with her mum and her friends。 Although I would have loved to read more about her friends。 But maybe we didn't get to read too much about them or their possible starts to a side story because they will get their own story in the future。 I would really really love that! 😍 Guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open for new books from her。 😉But altogether it was a really cute story and a nice quick read with a bit of drama。 😊 。。。more

This juicy love story I expected just didn’t make me want to keep turning the pages in one sitting。 I was excited to read The Upside of Falling because the book had recently come out in 2020, and I had only been seeing good reviews。 I had read Alex Light’s Wattpad and Episode Interactive stories as a younger girl, and I was super excited when I saw she had published her very first stand-alone novel。 Reading the first couple of pages on google pulled me in and I’m pleased to have read Becca and B This juicy love story I expected just didn’t make me want to keep turning the pages in one sitting。 I was excited to read The Upside of Falling because the book had recently come out in 2020, and I had only been seeing good reviews。 I had read Alex Light’s Wattpad and Episode Interactive stories as a younger girl, and I was super excited when I saw she had published her very first stand-alone novel。 Reading the first couple of pages on google pulled me in and I’m pleased to have read Becca and Brett’s romance, but it just didn’t lock me in enough。 Brett and Becca’s plot might have been just too bland for me。 I can think of two main reasons why I felt that way。 First, their affair was very colorless。 It felt as if I wasn’t reading a love story but two high school kids trying to resolve their relationships with their dads。 From Becca and Brett, I expected to read those dreamy thoughts about each other, but I didn’t get much from them。 I didn’t feel the connection and love between them and from my past experiences with romance novels, I wanted to feel it。 Also, when Becca and Brett’s big moment of finally getting together arrived, I had been let down right after because he ended it。 There was a lot of build-up but not much of a finishing romance。 The other reason why was because I felt the story did not touch up on a lot of things I wanted it to。 For example, Becca’s relationship with her mother was comforting, but I was sad that she never talked to her mom about what was going on with her dad。 I think her mom could have really guided her through the loss of that relationship since she had lost the same person as well。 I know Becca had a hard time talking about it, but I wanted her to share that she had been visiting his house in secret。 I also felt like her close friend Cassie disappeared throughout the story。 After the first small handful of chapters, we did not hear from her。 I knew Becca was spending a lot of time with Brett, but I liked Cassie and I wish she got more time in the book。 If Becca and Brett’s love story was more intriguing, and we got to connect with more of the side characters, I would have given it a higher rating。 For now, I have to give it 3 stars for being enjoyable but a bit rushed。 That being said, younger teenagers (12-14) would love this book。 It’s your average predictable and cheesy romance that attracts those ages! If you like the novel, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, I would definitely recommend this read。 I might just be too old now for these kinds of stories, which makes me sad because I loved these books as a younger teenager。 If you are into romances with a lot of drama, I wouldn’t waste your time trying this one out。 。。。more
